Last night, we announced the winners of Startup Weekend Stamford ’13 after a long, grueling, and, of course, fun weekend. Without further ado, here are the champions of this 54-hr frenzy (and what they won):

FIRST PLACE: ArtGoGo, a mobile application and website to support emerging contemporary artists in promoting their work and gaining exposure outside of the gallery system. It also provides non-artist users with the opportunity to discover and engage with new artists.

SECOND PLACE: Secure Your Own Device, a website and mobile app hoping to bring to life a new paradigm beyond the idea of ‘Manage Your Own Device’

THIRD PLACE: Books About Us, customized digital and print-based books that give children an interactive and personalized experience while learning to read

HONORABLE MENTION: CartWheel, software that will allow employers to receive a referral fee for each sale originating at their workplace to help offset the un-productivity from their employees

There were some pretty darn amazing pitches on Sunday night and all 11 teams deserve a huge round of applause.

Conveniently located in the heart of downtown, the Stamford Innovation Center can easily be reached by car or public transit. With unpredictable traffic on I-95, please consider riding the Metro-North Railroad between 4pm and 7pm. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the center from the Stamford Transportation Center.

If you drive, there are several available parking options, including the Bell Street Garage and the municipal lot behind Curly’s Diner. When the Stamford Town Center is open, it costs just $0.75 for four-hour parking. We recommend entering the parking garage via Greyrock, driving west, and parking under Saks Fifth Avenue. Then, just walk west to Atlantic Street and you will see the Stamford Innovation Center right before your eyes. There’s also limited street parking available, which is free after 6pm.

See you soon!

We don’t wanna judge you guys, but it’s part of the job. On Sunday night, we’ll gather for final presentations and award ceremony where a group of kick-ass judges will select the winning teams. Teams will be judged according to the following 3 criteria (weighed equally):

1. Business Model
The heart of it all. If you haven’t got answers to these questions, you’ve spent too much time on frills & features and need to get back to the basics:
a. Who is your customer?
b. What is your core value proposition?
c. What are your key activities?
d. What are your revenue streams?
e. What is your cost structure?
f. Who/what are your key partners/resources?
g. What are your distribution channels?
h. What is your roll-out strategy?

2. Customer Validation
Have you taken the proper steps to ensure that the people who matter (your future customers) support and reinforce your assumptions? Think of Customer Validation as ‘evidence’ to back up the core structure of your ‘theory’ (your Business Model). The more feedback you gather (quantity), the more this feedback comes from your specific target market (quality), and the more you’re able to actually integrate this feedback into the Business Model and product development (execution), the better.

3. Execution
The nitty gritty: what has your team been able to actually build over the weekend? Even the strongest of Business Plans are useless in the hands of those who can’t properly execute on them. Getting as far as possible in the development of your product/prototype not only helps give Judges a tangible vision of what the final product could be, but proves your strength and skills as a team. This is what truly matters: investors don’t invest as in ideas so much as teams.

With Startup Weekend Stamford only a few days away, we wanted to break down what you should bring (besides an idea, of course).

What to bring

Laptop

Business cards

Notebook

Pitching

Friday night pitches will be in a “pitch-fire” format, which means you will have just 60 seconds to get the audience interested in your idea. You will have no slides or props – just a microphone, smile, and a whole lotta excitement. You won’t have time to go into the nitty gritty, so just focus on the core idea and make your enthusiasm contagious. Here’s the pitch format we recommend:

Who are you, what’s your background, etc (5-10 Seconds)

What problem does your product solve–or start with a story (10-20 Seconds)

Explain the product and how it solves the problem (10-20 seconds)

Who do you need on your team (developer, marketer, designer, etc) (5-10 seconds)

Develop name of your startup (so the facilitator can give it a title)

Voting & Forming Teams

After pitches, you will have more time to mingle. If you pitched an idea, this is your time to start recruiting others interested in your idea. If you did not pitch, or if you are having trouble finding others to join your team, use this time to seek out those that pitched other ideas you found interesting.

Next, the crowd votes on its favorite pitches. This is a simple a way to encourage quick team formation. From there, we will form teams and these are the startup ideas that will be worked on over Startup Weekend Stamford ’13. Let the games begin!

Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startups.

Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable. On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds.

Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees are encouraged to bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams design and develop business plans while constantly streamlining their startup vision. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes, listen to judges’ feedback and in some cities, win prizes.

Startup Weekends are specifically designed for entrepreneurs interested in receiving feedback on an idea, looking for a co-founder, or who want to learn a new skill. We also welcome anyone looking to test the entrepreneurial waters. Startup Weekends are risk-free environments where everyone is expected to roll up their sleeves and dive into the exhilarating world of startups.
